Dark Vs. Light Psychology

Mar 18, 2026

"It has to be worth something." Actually, no, it doesn't.

"But I spent so much time and energy on it. It's supposed to have a payoff!" After the first 3 months without a payoff, when did you think a payoff would come?

"I will not lose again!"  Then you won't grow past what was lost.

Dark psychology, a subject I have too much experience in without much of the verbiage around.. demands that you must "make it worthwhile". It's the complete opposite of light psychology. Light psychology operates on growth and progress. If life isn't moving and growing, we adjust and keep moving and growing.. In this same regard, dark psychology would demand, "I won't move on until..."

Dark psychology: life on a chain.

Light psychology: that plant didn't grow... let's try this one.

See the difference?

But why am I talking about psychology on an artist's business website?

Because we've lost too many to dark psychology -- Kurt; Chris; Robin.

And plenty of more names, that aren't, haven't been, and might not ever be in the headlines.

Because, anything can be a drug; an addiction on the brain. Simply because our brains can. It doesn't matter if it's a substance or a belief system -- addiction is addiction. Addiction is dark psychology.

Now there is obsession, which isn't always resulting in addiction. Proverbs even quotes intoxication of love as a good thing. Think Romeo and Juliet. They were obsessed, not possessed. Naive? Absolutely -- they didn't have to be so drastic and die.. The point is, addiction results in a lack of direction and control for your life; obsession results in manifestation, growth, and decisiveness for your life (even if that means dying for Romeo and Juliet -- I don't recommend you follow their lead; unless you apply that example to the death of one's ego.)

Hey there,

I’m picking up a few days after I hit publish and didn’t realize I hadn’t finished the blog post. I didn’t realize it was published without a photo also. I came back to it and thought to myself, “I thought I finished this — did the rest of it not save?” No. I just didn’t finish it.

But you know what — that’s healthy light psychology in real-time. Thought I was done, made a mistake, and now I’m back, picking up where I left off. Light psychology is all about balance. Looking back at this scenario, I think my brain closed the tab because I was at capacity for the topic for the day. This can be a good thing when this happens — it shows your brain isn’t addicted.

So where are you at on this spectrum of dark vs. light psychology? Are you living life on a chain, in consistent stagnancy, and continuity without evolution? Or are you ever-evolving? Are you able to let go? Are you able to say no? Is your obsession rooted in addiction or a desire to improve in your life?
