Are You Listening to the Metaphysics In Your Life?

Aug 13, 2025

First, before I get into the wild extravagances of the universe from my own stories of 5 rings and other jewelry and items that have landed in my path, you have to know about this idea of Big Magic, coined by Elizabeth Gilbert. About 18 months ago I read her book, Big Magic, which is all about this concept of ideas being living energy forms in the universe. These wonderful ideas befall us to spur creativity. They can leave us, and they can even be exchanged between us. While reading the book, I experienced Big Magic exchanges 3 separate times… and I only spent 3.5 weeks reading the book!

All this to say, there is something in our world, spiritual, Godly, heavenly, Big Magic, notes from the universe, God-winks from heaven, that happen all the time… if you are open to it.

If you don’t believe it's possible, you probably won’t ever see it or experience it.

So, I believe our lives can speak to us and the universe gives us hints as to the when’s/why’s/how’s of the events in our lives. About where we should go and where our focus should remain. But frankly — I haven’t been able to get away from this type of thing my entire existence. The very first memory I have of Big Magic/a gift from heaven/etc? I was 3 years old, in my car seat when a diamond engagement ring dropped into my lap.

So strap in, we're going all the way back to 1996.

Ring #1 - 1950’s 14K Gold and White Gold Diamond Engagement Ring

I'm 3 years old, buckled into my carseat in the back right passenger seat of our vinyl-planked van, in Tallahassee, Florida. My Mom, and sister and I had just pulled into our driveway having returned home from a church garage sale, where I held onto a purse my mom had purchased the entire way home. I had unzipped the purse during the ride. When my mom unbuckled and picked me up, a 14k gold engagement ring from the 50’s fell out into my seat.

My mom, being a dutiful rule-follower, turned in the ring to the local police station. They told her that if no one claimed it within 90 days, she could come back and claim it.

So 90 days later, my mom would start wearing this ring for the next 20 years, until she would gift it back to me at the age of 23.

Finding a gold ring though, is representative of a slew of positive omens, from abundance in a variety of things to being a reminder to practice gratitude. And as for the diamonds, they are seen to be cleansing and purifying of the soul. Obviously at 3 years old, you don't think about why a gold ring would fall in your lap but looking back, it’s almost as if my path was predetermined, because these type of heavenly metaphysical gifts kept coming.

But what's metaphysics?

Metaphysics in a nutshell is a branch of philosophy that looks at the connection of reality + existence. It questions personal purpose in the world. So when it comes to this ring - and every other item I've received, you have the ring (reality) and the who/what/where (existence) questioning the why, the purpose behind it all.

With that we can interpret about this first ring:

-It was found in a place of protection (a car seat), in a moment of care (mom lifting her daughter up), with the ring having been secured safe (zipped inside the purse)... My later interpretation of this is: it's in the bag. What you carry with you, that's your life. It's in the bag.

-Communication from the divine that I would be protected and have a life of love and abundance.

Ring #2 - 925 Silver Band with Pink Gemstone

I’m 10 years old and it’s the height of summer in Lakewood, Washington. My mom, siblings and I would always walk from our duplex down to American Lake. We’d stop by the corner store and buy Oatmeal Crème Pies, Swiss Rolls, Charleston Chews, Laffy Taffy’s, Sobe drinks and Jones Sodas on our way. When we reached the lake we’d lay out or towels and head for the water.

One day at the lake, my younger sister found a 10 dollar bill floating under water while we were swimming, scouring for treasures. I wanted to keep it. I was jealous she had found that money, just a moment before I saw it, but what was I going to do — steal it? That’s not right. So I had to let it go.

I can’t remember if it was that same day or another day, but nearly in the same spot at some point, I found a silver ring, with a pink gemstone in it. I’d keep that ring for another 20 years before I would understand just what it meant. I even tried to sell it one time, but it wouldn’t sell. I hadn’t learned from this universe-bearing gift yet.

But I had to wait for that ring, and also having to find that ring sunken beneath the water’s surface, was like a nod from the universe saying, “Brooke — you’re going to have to wait a little longer for what’s meant for you. You’re going to have to look closer and deeper to find it. But when it’s your time? Oh it’s going to be good.”

So this ring, it holds the power of patience, but also the power of play, adventure and discovery.

Ring #3 - Thin Rose Gold with “V” Bend

My friend and I had just completed a long walk and were famished. She was skeptical of having southern food in our area, but she followed my lead anyways.

While waiting for our food at a brewery, she had gone up to the restroom and I turned my body so I could stretch my legs long across the picnic bench. As I do this, I look down on the ground and see a solid gold band ring with a divet bend to form a “V” within it.

I have one like this, I think to myself — but it’s silver and the “V” is deeper.

This ring isn’t a special metal, but it’s still a ring I found nonetheless.

A ring I found while relaxing with a friend, despite her reservations on the source of our meal.

This ring embodies and holds the power of friendship, relaxation, and connection over shared nourishment.

Ring #4 - Rose Gold with Diamond Studs

I had been contemplating leaving a part time job, where I had been teaching music lessons for nearly a year. Waking up on a Sunday morning to meet my first student at 11:15, I was anxious and had insomnia the night before (if you are ever experiencing insomnia from the thought of going somewhere, do yourself a favor: quit.) Getting into the practice room that morning, I found a rose gold wavy band with diamond studs, sitting right on the piano near where I sit for lessons. And you know how kids just KNOW anything and everything? This student knew straight away that this was a gift for me, asking: “Who gave that to you?” She was 7.

So I realized the exchange necessary at this store had run its course. It was okay for me to leave. As hard as it was to say goodbye to those students, it was time for me to move. With regard to how and where this ring was found, it represents and holds the power of learning. And what happens when we’ve learned something in full? We move on to the next step.

Ring #5 - Silver Diamond Band

I worked as a resident manager for a 30 unit residence awhile back. One day I was doing some clean up around the building, garbage grabber and bag in hand, and I found a diamond band lying on the sidewalk. This wasn’t a real diamond band and it had a few diamond studs missing, but it was a full diamond band nonetheless.

Diamonds, represent spiritual cleansing. And that’s exactly what I‘d been doing since moving into that spot just a couple months prior. About a month before in June 2023, I uncovered the suppressed memory that worked to overlook the onset of trauma in my life at age 9. I finally had peace — I could start cleansing my spirit from all the emotional weight of the why or how.

This ring was a representation of all of that, holding the power of spiritual cleansing, being a reminder of consistency and maintenance that I would need to upkeep, in order to keep my soul at peace as I continued (really started) forward on my journey.

Metaphysics goes beyond inspiration though. Metaphysics applies to our circumstances and experiences as well -- especially the negative or not so fun ones. Scenarios like these rings, the few other pieces of jewelry, the vehicles I've owned and even a guitar that was gifted from the universe are all just love letters from our spirit guides saying "keep going". And that "keep going" and finding purpose from pain are messages that I carry with me, when I choose to overcome the negative experiences. So really, we're all just walking water bags with messages in them...(it's in the bag! Remember?)

And that's just the challenge we're facing day in and day out how clean are you keeping your water?

If we let the idea of Big Magic speak to us about our lives — how much blessing, adventure, peace, love, protection, power do we really have within and around us?

I bet it’s more than you recognize.

Doing that will never make a difference though, if you don't start to learn to filter out the negative. That's where black and white thinking does pay off — is it good and does it bring peace? Or is it a ball of confusion bringing in chaos?

If you're lost somewhere in the confusion + chaos, guess what — you're here. Investing time into something that has hopefully, brought you an ounce more of peace, inspiration and hope that you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. Cause if you're like me, all the odds were never in your favor — but you've continued to find a way forward. You've continued to build and improve your life.

Never stop being curious about where you can go or what you can do (that's good + healthy).

Keep showing up. Pay attention to those blessings from the divine metaphysical gifts that fall into your lap.
